I'm originally from the Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties in PA. I was born around West Philadelphia and moved all over south eastern PA growing up! I graduated from Downingtown East High School in the spring of 2012 and then started my journey at Millersville University a few months later.

At Millersville, I met some wonderful people through the psychology, art, and music departments. I learned so much during my undergraduate years and I am proud to say I graduated with my degree in Psychology and Art in 2017. Shortly after graduating, I started working for the amazing P.U.L.S.E. program! In this program, we serve the community and provide research/evidence-based treatment services, heavily reliant on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing to adolescents.

We teach them about positive behavior change and teach classes such as Aggression Replacement Training® (ART), employment skills, coping skills, life skills, Girl’s Circle®, and self-development skills such as social perception, problem solving and empathy. A few months later, I obtained a second job as a TSS  (Therapeutic Staff Support), and worked with children in local school districts with severe emotional and behavioral diagnoses. I had the pleasure of working in a handful of schools and met several talented and caring teachers/staff that taught me so much about working with children. I was originally planning on attending graduate school for school counseling, since I participated in a year long internship during my undergrad. However, after working with the kids at my program and working as a TSS, I changed my mind. I realized through teaching these classes at the PULSE after school program, I LOVE teaching! I love seeing kids get excited about learning something new that interests them and seeing the smile on their faces when they succeed!

Almost a year after earning my Bachelor's  degree, I returned to Millersville University to begin two post-baccalaureate teaching certification programs: Early Childhood Education K-4 and Special Education K-8. I also started working on my Master's in Early Childhood Education. For two and a half years, I was a graduate student while working two jobs. Even though it was stressful at times, it was nothing but a rewarding experience. What really kept me going was the thought of having my own classroom one day, and inspiring young students to foster a love for learning. Student teaching during the pandemic was an interesting experience, and I am so grateful for all the support I had during that time! I completed my post-baccalaureate programs in December 2020 and I am currently looking for a K-4 or special education K-8 position. I cannot wait for my next adventure!

Why I Want To Be A Teacher

I want to be a teacher and work with young children because I believe in change. If we want our society to improve and our education system to get better, then we have to believe in change. If we want our children to love learning, and live happier, healthier and more well-informed lives, then we have to start teaching these ideas at an early age and change the way we approach education.

During my time at the Youth Intervention Center, I met a lot of children who did not have a great support system growing up. Many of them told me that they did not enjoy school and some of them barely attended. They said that they did not like any of their teachers because the teachers did not believe in their success, school was not interesting or fun to them, and no one was there to help when they needed it. To hear that as an educator, it broke my heart. I wondered at what point could they have had a teacher that changed their perspective.

I always want to be that teacher that inspires children to continue learning and never give up. Learning should be fun! Let's better support our students and motivate them!
